Briggs & Stratton model NPW water cooled engine

Not much is known about these Rare water cooled Briggs & Stratton engines. Most were evidently specially built for a company called united states motors for use as small marine propulsion engines and motor generator sets. The block and head were cast by U.S. motors and sent to briggs & stratton for machineing and assembly. This particular engine is a modification of the Briggs model N. Others were also made based on the model Z and 8 Briggs engine.

Water cooled briggs & stratton model 8 Built in the 1950'S

This water cooled Briggs engine is essentially the same as the Briggs model NPW. But has a 2.25" bore instead of the 2.00" bore of the model N as well as a 1.00" exhaust valve instead of the 7/8" exhaust valve of the model NPW. This gave the engine a little more H.P.

Briggs & Stratton Model AM 1941 Marine Conversion

Briggs & stratton model AM. Model A briggs with forword nuteral and reverse transmission. Type # 25643 Serial # 64843

VIDEO
The a series engine was introduced in 1933. The engines was heaviely built and fits well in industrial applications. This one is a marine conversion. It has the largest carburation bore (11/16") for more power and no governor. The AM was sold to end users, to be used as a direct drive (start the engine and go) or as this one, a forward, nutral, & reverse transmission was puton. This one has a 2.5 to 1 gear reduction in forward and reverse. These engines were used in row boats up to around 16FT. This one was in a sail boat for auxilary power.
